First tank of gas down…
Well, the Yaris has sipped it’s first tank of gas nearly dry, and the gas mileage is at about 8.1 L/100km. That’s with about 2/3 city driving, but still a bit of a far cry from the 6.9/5.5 (city/highway) L/100km promised by the Toyota specs. Tracking (and driving) continues, and luckily I’m still loving Yaris.

Hey Steve – keep in mind that you won’t get the best milage out of your car for a few tanks as the engine is still breaking in… also, if you’re just learning to drive a manual transmission you’ll probably be able to improve your technique and therefore increase your milage.

Actually Toyota claims your engine comes broken in for you – it says so someplace in your manual, or at least it did with my car which has a virtually identical engine. I’ve found on the echo my mileage is generally between the rated city and highway mileage. Most people notice reductions in mileage in winter though, due to a combination of the extra fuel used when heating up the engine and the reduced energy contect of winter gas blends. I’m tracking my latest tank again to see if there is a signicant difference between summer and winter mileage.
Cold air is also more dense, which should increase drag somewhat, although I’m not sure if it would be enough to significantly impact on mileage.
Is it mileage or milage?

Hey Matt, in my manual Toyota claims that while not a lot of care is required during the break-in phase of the car, it still advises against hard driving for the first thousand km or so if I recall correctly. We’ll see how the mileage goes with the next tanks. I’m still working on trying to figure out how linear (or non-linear) my gas gauge is (it’s an 8-segment bar graph, so not quite as good as a needle).
And it can be either mileage or milage, depending on what suits your fancy.

I found the gas guage in the hatch (8 bar) is pretty nonlinear. It seems that the bars have a decreasing value as you work your way through the tank.
