It’s possible.

Being a Better Blogger http://utools.ca/journal/2008/02/05/being-a-better-blogger/ http://utools.ca/journal/2008/02/05/being-a-better-blogger/#comments Tue, 05 Feb 2008 10:38:01 +0000 Steve Woodrow http://www.utools.ca/journal/2008/02/05/being-a-better-blogger/ You might have noticed that I’m getting back in the blogging saddle again. It’s part of what I plan to write more about at a later date (and actually work towards as well) — taking an iterative approach to life. That is, instead of always trying to get it right the first time, just do something that will get you started in the right direction. Hence a small blog post or a few photos — creativity — as frequently as possible. It’s certainly easier than writing a treatise on your thoughts.

On the origins of “bread and circuses” http://utools.ca/journal/2008/01/31/on-the-origins-of-bread-and-circuses/ http://utools.ca/journal/2008/01/31/on-the-origins-of-bread-and-circuses/#comments Thu, 31 Jan 2008 08:50:22 +0000 Steve Woodrow http://www.utools.ca/journal/2008/01/31/on-the-origins-of-bread-and-circuses/ In the context of the debate over a Winnipeg waterpark (and its pushing forward despite so many other pressing priorities), I was curious about the etymology of the expression “bread and circuses”. Some wikipedia-ing turned this up, for those of you who are curious like me:

…Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions – everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.

— from Wikipedia, from Juvenal’s Satire X.

I hate to be that glass-half-empty guy, but it sounds about right for much of society’s relationship with its government these days. I suppose, as they say (to follow one cliché with another), “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

“If not us, then who?” http://utools.ca/journal/2007/10/23/if-not-us-then-who/ http://utools.ca/journal/2007/10/23/if-not-us-then-who/#comments Tue, 23 Oct 2007 07:28:22 +0000 Steve Woodrow http://www.utools.ca/journal/2007/10/23/if-not-us-then-who/ Lawrence Lessig, founder of the Creative Commons, Stanford law professor, and copyright scholar, has turned his attention to corruption resulting from the influence of money and its impact on the decisions made by government, etc.

He presents a strong and compelling first lecture on the subject here.

Perhaps the most important thing we can take from this is the issue of responsibility. As he states, “The most outrageous part of this story of corruption is that this is corruption primed by the most privileged within our society. And the second most outrageous part is that this is corruption permitted by the passivity of another class of privileged, namely us.”

While those of us who are “wealthy, secure, and articulate” have not committed the wrongs leading to corruption of our government, we are complicit in these wrongs if we sit back and fail to take action.
